At-Home Learning Opportunities for 2017

You probably know by now that there are a plethora of opportunities to increase your knowledge on genealogy research processes. Many of them are accessed from your home for free. Here are the webinars that are offered during the month of April 2017.

Family History Library Webinars

The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has published their March, April, and May classes, including many free webinars. Most of the classes offered in those months are for the Beginner, but there are a few in April for the Intermediate researcher. Legacy Family Tree Webinars
Legacy Family Tree webinars is known for its quality genealogy webinars by professional and well-known genealogists. Every Wednesday afternoon, and once a month on Friday evening, a new webinar is broadcast live for free. The webinar is recording and available for free viewing about a week following the broadcast. After that, you must be a subscribed member.

It is necessary to pre-register for the webinar if you wish to attend live. The entire 2017 year of webinars are available for registration by visiting the Legacy Family Tree Webinars website. Occasionally, a special webinar as slid in on short notice, like Blain Bettinger's Exploring AncestryDNA's New Genetic Communities announced last week and scheduled for Thursday, March 30. It is a good idea to check the schedule frequently or to subscribe to the Legacy Family Tree News in order to catch those special broadcasts.

Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) Webinars

The BCG offers monthly free webinars "as part of an ongoing series that supports our mission to provide education for family historians." (President Jeanne Larzalere Bloom, CG). In late July, 2016, BCG partnered with Legacy Family Tree Webinars to host, produce, and publish all future BCG webinars (go here to read the announcement). The BCG webinars are stored on a separate webpage on the Legacy Family Tree Webinars website. These webinars are broadcast live the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 5pm Pacific, and the recordings are available for free viewing for a limited time. The March 21 webinar Are You My Grandpa? Men of the Same Name by Rebecca Whitman Koford, CG, is still free through March 31, 2017. April's webinar will be The Genealogy in Government Documents by Rick Sayre scheduled for April 18, 2017.


Illinois State Genealogical Society (ISGS) Webinars
Sponsored by FamilySearch, ISGS webinars are broadcast live the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 8pm Central Time. The 2017 upcoming webinars are described on their Upcoming Webinars webpage. The live broadcast is offered free to everyone, but you must pre-register. Recordings are available to ISGS members indefinitely. Visit their website for infomation about their organization and the genealogy education opportunities.

April's webinar is Tracing slave and slave owner Ancestors with DNA and Genealogy by Nicka Smith on April 11. A printable brochure of the ISGS webinars for 2017 is found here.

Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Webinars
SCGS webinars are offered twice monthly (the first Saturday and third Wednesday). The live broadcasts are free and open to the public; the recordings are available only to SCGS members. You must register to participate. The Saturday webinars are held in the morning (10am Pacific) and the Wednesday webinars are held in the evening (6pm Pacific). Visit their 2017 Webinar Series webpage for the scheduled broadcasts this year. The April webinars are:

 BYU Family History Library Webinars
Separate from the Family History Library above, the BYU Family History Library hosts a series of online webinars that allow you to learn from family history experts without being required to go to the library. All webinars can be held on any evening. It is easy to connect to these webinars and view them on your own computer or mobile device.  The Online Webinars Webpage has a form you can fill out to receive emails on upcoming webinars. The schedule is usually posted there a month in advance; currently, the March and April schedules are there. Some of the April webinars are:

Genealogy Education Opportunities for April in Youngtown, Arizona

The West Valley Genealogical Society & Library, 12222 N. 111th Ave., Youngtown, is pleased to announce additional educational opportunities for the month of April 2016.

April 15, 2016: Novice Genealogy, 1:00 – 3:00 PM.  This class, taught by an experienced genealogist, will assist those who are new to family history research.  Join others, who are also new to genealogy, and begin building your family tree.  You’ll learn how to locate your ancestors through the use of various types of resources such as: the census, pension lists, church records and more.  Registration required at www.azwvgs.org, click store/classes or events/classes.

April 21, 2016: Special Research Evening, 5:00 – 9:00 PM.  Everyone is welcome to attend this informal session.  You’re welcome to peruse the library’s extensive holdings and visit the state-of-the-art computer lab to access Ancestry, Fold 3, World Vital Records, and the New England Historic Genealogical Society.  Please bring a sack dinner; beverage and dessert provided with a $3.50 donation.  To register call 623-933-4945.

April 25, 2016:  Free Library Tour, 9:30 – 11:00 AM.  Are you curious about your ancestors and aren’t sure exactly “where or how” to begin researching?  This free tour provides the perfect starting-off point.  Join the Librarian as she guides you through the largest operating genealogical library in Arizona.  In addition to thousands of resources, covering every state and many other countries, the library holds many exclusive collections.  The tour will also include a visit to the state-of-the-art computer lab where access to Ancestry, Fold 3 and many other online resources are available.  To register call 623-933-4945.

Genealogy Webinars for 2016

Last October, we published an article about Bringing Genealogy Education into Your Home. At that time, we gave you a list of organizations that offer free genealogy webinars. Well, it's a new year and there are new webinars coming down the pike.

Family History Library Webinars
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has published their February and March class line-up, including their free webinars. They consistently offer high quality classes for beginning and intermediate skill levels. Visit the Family History Library Classes and Webinars wiki page for the schedule and links to upcoming webinars and handouts. Jump down to section 2 Past Webinars for links to the recording of past webinars and handouts. The webinars are grouped by country of topic in both the Upcoming webinars and the Past webinars:

• US/Canada

Most of the Latin America webinars are taught in Spanish, but a few are taught in English. The past Spanish language classes are listed here; the past English language classes are listed here.

Migration Routes Across America will be broadcast on February 11 at 10am Mountain Time. This is an intermediate level webinar. Legacy Family Tree Webinars
Legacy Family Tree Webinars is in its seventh year of providing quality genealogy webinars by professional and well-known genealogists such as Thomas MacEntee, Cyndi Ingle, Judy G. Russell, Warren Bittner, Tom Jones, and so many more! Each month you may watch five or six webinars: every Wednesday afternoon, once a month on Friday evening, and even a couple of Saturdays this year. The live webinars are free, but pre-registration is required and attendance is limited to 1,000 viewers so it is best to log in at least 15-20 minutes early. During the live broadcast, you are able to enter questions and comments in the chat box. The questions will either be answered by the moderator (usually Geoff Rasmussen), sometimes shared to all viewers, or will be asked during the Q&A session. At the end of the presentation, Geoff Rasmussen will demonstrate Legacy Family Tree software in a way that is relevant to the topic just discussed—this is called the After Party.

Recordings of these webinars are available to view for free for about a week following the live webinar. After that, you must be a paid subscriber to view the recordings. The advantages to attending the live broadcast are 1) you may download the chatlog which contain a lot of comments, links, and answers to questions not necessarily asked in the recording and 2) there are drawings to give away an ebook, quick guide, and/or some other items relevant to the day's topic for which you must be "present" to participate. Visit their website to see the schedule for this year and to register for webinars you may wish to attend live. If you want to watch a specific webinar, but am unable to attend live, it is still a good idea to register for it. Registrants will receive an email reminder before the webinar and a "Sorry you missed..." email afterwards, which lets you know that the recording is online and available to view for a few days.

This month's webinar is Reconstructing Black Community Life Through Benevolent Societies by Angela Walton-Raji and will be broadcast on February 9.

Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Webinars
SCGS webinars are offered twice monthly (the first Saturday and third Wednesday). The live broadcasts are free and open to the public; the recordings are available only to SCGS members. You must register to participate in the live broadcast. Visit their 2016 Webinar Series webpage for the schedule for this year, to register, and for instructions for joining the webinar. Diahan Southard was the guest speaker for the last webinar: Making YDNA and mtDNA Part of Your Family History broadcast on January 20. The two classes scheduled for February are:

Announcing Local Seminars, Conferences, and Educational Opportunities

February and March have always been busy months for genealogists in Southern Arizona. The Pima County Genealogy Society received notification of two conferences and one seminar coming up. All of these events require registration and have a registration deadline.

The Mesa FamilySearch Library is offering two mini-Family History conferences in response to our "need for more training." Below is the announcement:

The Mesa AZ FamilySearch Library is pleased to announce two Family History Conferences coming up in February and March, 2016.  The first conference will be held on Saturday, February 20, at the Red Mountain Institute building on the Maricopa Community College Red Mountain campus.  This facility is located near the 202 and McKellips Road, at 7126 E McKellips Road, Mesa.  The second conference will be held on Saturday, March 12, at the Peoria North LDS Stake Center on 22034 North 83^rd Avenue in Peoria.  Both conferences will offer classes from morning through late afternoon.  Lunches may be purchased.  Register online now for the February 20^th conference at www.mesafsl.org.  Registration for the March 12^th conference will be available in mid-February.  Please join us.

March 4, 2016: Family History Research in Salt Lake City, 10:00 AM - 12 Noon. This class covers everything you need to know about preparing for a research trip to the Family History Library.  In addition to covering an overview of the facility and its vast resources, you'll learn: what items to take and best practices for setting research objectives. If you don't have immediate plans to travel to the Family History Library, you're still welcome to attend this informative class in order to prepare for a future family research trip.

March 9, 16, 23, 30, 2016: Research Techniques II, 1:00 - 3:00 PM. This four session class is open to everyone, however, it is designed to build on your existing research skills.  An experienced genealogist will guide you through in-depth research using multiple resources such as land, church, immigration and naturalization records.  Also covers military and probate records and much more.

March 15, 2016: What to do with Your Genealogy Research, 1:00 - 3:00 PM.  This class centers on gathering and organizing your personal genealogical collection such as family heirlooms and books.  Also covers the importance of designating assignment to your heirs and why you should write your own obituary!   Learn how to find your way through estate auctions and to understand the heirloom appraisal process.

Bringing Genealogy Education into Your Home

Every year around this time, we start thinking about furthering our education. And every year we are given many opportunities to increase our knowledge and research skills for free, or nearly so. Here are some ways you can bring the classroom into your own home. Most of these webinars have a chat box available during the live broadcast for attendees to ask questions, making it seem almost like being in the room with the presenter.

To determine local time, visit the Time Zone Converter, enter the date and time of the broadcast, select the From Time Zone (for example, US/Central), select the To Time Zone (for example, US/Arizona), and click on the green "Convert Time Now" button.


Family History Library Webinars
Each month, the Family History Library hosts a number of free online family history webinars. The list of upcoming webinars are on the Family History Library Classes and Webinars wiki page. I counted 23 webinars scheduled for October and 6 for November. Topics range from researching in US church, cemetery and vital records to improving skills in citing sources, organizing your research, and solving tough research problems to international research techniques in England, Germany, Italy, and Portugal and much, much more. Most of the Latin America webinars are taught in Spanish. And that is only in the months of October and November!  Registration for these webinars is not necessary—simply go to the webinars wiki page 15 minutes before the webinar begins and click on the link next to the group teaching the webinar (US/Canada, British Isles, International/Scandinavian, or Latin America). You can also find recordings of past webinars on pretty much every country that same wiki page. Handouts for all upcoming and past webinars are at the Family History Library Class Handouts wiki page.


Legacy Family Tree Webinars
Every Wednesday is Webinar Wednesday at Legacy Family Tree Webinars. Prominent Genealogists give a free hour-long presentation every Wednesday at 12pm Mountain, except the second Wednesday which is at 7pm Mountain time. Once a month an additional webinar is offered on Friday, also at 12pm Mountain. The webinars are free, but pre-registration is required to attend the live session. Following the live webinar, the recording will be available to view for free for about a week. After that, you must be a paid member to view the recording. You also must be a member to download the handouts. Visit their website to see the schedule for the rest of this year and to register for webinars you wish to attend live.

ISGS offers a webinar on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 8pm Central time. These webinars cover topics on a wide range of research methodology and strategies relevant to all genealogists, not just Illinois and the Midwest. And the presenters are some of the best-known genealogy speakers. The live broadcasts are free and open to the public. After the live broadcast, the recording is available to ISGS members only. Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) Webinars
Live SCGS webinars are broadcast the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. Saturday sessions are held at 10am Pacific time and Wednesday sessions are held at 6pm Pacific time. The webinars are presented by professional genealogists and lecturers. The live broadcasts are free to the general public; the recordings are available only to SCGS members. To view the schedule for the rest of this year and to register for the webinars, visit the SCGS Webinar Series website.

BCG Webinars
The Board for Certification of Genealogists present occasional free webinars. There doesn't appear to be a schedule of those webinars, but they announce the a few days in advance on their blog SpringBoard News and Notes. To receive email notification of upcoming webinars, visit their blog and scroll down to the Email Notification area, enter your email address where indicated and click the Subscribe button. Pre-registration is required to attend the live viewing. BCG offers recordings of some of their past webinars, some are free but most are available for a fee. Previews and links to all videos are available on the BCG Webinars page.

New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) Online Classes
NEHGS offers online educational programs in the form of webinars, videos, and online classes. Most webinars are available for NEHGS members and Guests. Registration is required. Visit their Online Classes webpage for the schedule and to register. Archived webinars are available from their Learning Resources webpage and from the AmericanAncestors YouTube channel. Most of the webinars are about using the resources available at NEHGS and AmericanAncestors.org, but also give instruction on how to do research in the New England states and Canada. AmericanAncestors databases are free to patrons of the Tucson Family History Center.

As you can see, there are many options for furthering our education in genealogy. Take a look at what is offered between now and the end of the year and go for it! I promise that you won't be disappointed.
