Extra! Extra! Workshop on Newspapers in September 2017!

Find Your Family in the News of the Day! Melanie Sturgeon, Ph.D, will be in Tucson on September 30 to teach us how to find our family in newspapers.

Melanie recently retired as the State Archivist and director of the Arizona State Archives and Records Management Branch of the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records where sh served for 16 years. She has a Ph.D. in history and is an avid family historian. She uses a variety of newspapers to help find missing ancestors, to learn more about them and to help her in her writing about 19th century prostitutes. As an archivist who works with government records, she is familiar with numerous primary sources that contain information about people. She has taught family and oral history workshops throughout the state of Arizona and has conducted over 100 oral history interviews ranging from family histories to interviews with the original residents of the first Sun City.

Putting a Spark into Starting (or Restarting) Your Family Tree

PCGS is pleased to announce a new workshop: Charge! Putting a Spark into Starting or Restarting Your Family Tree, featuring members of our Board of Directors.

This beginner's workshop is limited to 30 participants. Our seasoned genealogists will cover these topics:

• Documents to gather and search
• Chart basics and genealogy tools
• Moving from paper to digital
• What and where to document

Our instructors have a combined 95+ years of experience.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 9:30AM to 12 Noon in Rooms 2500 E & F at Banner-University Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Road, Tucson, AZ. The cost to attend is $15 for PCGS members and $20 for non-members.

You will come to Part Two, "Polish Up," on Saturday, May 28, 2016, with a draft of your finished story and will receive editorial feedback to help you polish it into a finished product.

Participants do not have to attend both sessions, but the fee is the same whether you attend one or both. Advanced registration is required and must be received no later than April 16, 2016. Do It the Write Way: A Special Two-Part Writing Workshop

This special two-part writing workshop will give attendees some tried and true techniques to bring their family history to life and create a fascinating story anyone would want to read. Our instructor, Rondie Yancey, will help you flex your writing muscles to create something of lasting value for you and your family.

If you are one of those people who got scared to death by their high school English teachers—FEAR NOT!! We will prove to you that You CAN write and share the family story you have been researching all these years. If you can talk, you can write an interesting and informative story your family will love to read. So...

Registration now open for Microsoft Word Workshop

Whether you want to write your family history story for publication in a national magazine, a local genealogy society newsletter, publish a book, or just for yourself, you will need to use a word processing program. Microsoft Word is a popular word processor with powerful and robust capabilities that can help you create beautiful documents.

Pima County Genealogy Society is presenting a Microsoft Word workshop. This workshop will give attendees a solid foundation of the features a genealogist would use most often. Using MS Word 2013, Sherri Hessick will teach participants:

• Basic document formatting skills
• How to create and use Styles and Templates
• How to design and work with tables
• How to insert and place pictures and text boxes into your document
• How to add headers and footers
• How to add endnotes and footnotes
• How to generate a Table of Contents and Index
• How to markup and track document changes

All of the features taught at the workshop can be done in earlier versions of MS Word as well as in LibreOffice 5.0.


The workshop will be especially useful for anyone planning to attend the special 2-part Writing workshop or to enter the 2016 Write-On! competition (details to be announced shortly).

The cost for attending the workshop is $10 for PCGS members and $15 for non-members. Advance registration is required and must be received no later than April 16, 2016.
