Roots Magic's SIG this Saturday

There will be a Roots Magic Support Group this Saturday, September 1 in Room 2117 at the U of A College of Medicine. I know it is holiday on Monday, but we have missed a couple of months, so I am going for this one.

We will probably be having one or two guests or beginners at this meeting. You are welcome to bring a guest if you know of something interested in genealogy software.

Bring any questions or problems you are having for discussion. We will also be going over another chapter in the Manual.

Free Census Searches at Ancestry.com Aug 29th through Sep 3

News Release from Ancestry.com!

From August 29th through September 3rd, Ancestry.com is opening all of its U.S. census records – FREE. You can start your free census search at www.ancestry.com/census.

Learn about your family’s true story in the census records and see what your own life could have been like as an adult in 1940 with the Ancestry.com Time Machine. Ancestry has an interactive, time-travel experience requires just a handful of information provided by you. In return, you get a custom video featuring YOU in 1940. While it’s not genealogy, it is high-tech fun. Create your own video and share it with your followers. And encourage them to create their own at www.ancestry.com/TimeMachine.

Another Ancestry tool is the free guide Follow Your Family Using Census Records available at Census Guide.

How do I research for free this weekend?

To gain access to ArkivDigital free over the weekend August 25-26 2012 you have to do a few things. It is not difficult; just follow the steps below carefully.
  1. Register with us
    • If you have already registered then proceed to paragraph 2.
    • If you are not registered with us previously, you will have to do the following; Go to:http://www.arkivdigital.net/users/register and fill in the information requested. Be especially careful to write the correct email address and password you choose. The password must consist of at least 6 characters and/or numbers.
  2. Installation
    • Install the software ADOnLine2, http://www.arkivdigital.net/products/adonline/installation. If you do not have the latest version we advise you to install it. The latest version is called 1.4.2 (rev 610). You can see which version you have if you press the Help menu and then click About in the program.
    • During the installation you will be asked some questions. You must respond to them "in a positive way" and when installation is complete, you will have an icon on your desktop called “ADOnLine2”.
    • Double-click the icon to start the program.
    • Now the login box appears. Fill in your login information (email address and password). Be sure to enter them exactly as you did when you registered - there is an important distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters. If you get an error message regarding your email address, something is not correctly entered. Click to close the error messages and then open the log in box from the File (sv: Arkiv) menu and “Login”. Now the login box appears again. Erase all information and fill in your details again.
  3. Start researching.
    • Once you have logged in the program opens and you can start researching immediately.
    • To the left you will find a list of archives. Find "your" church/archive in the list or type it directly into the search box above – the list will be filtered according to what you type. Then click on the name of the Church (parish) in the list to select.
    • To the right you will find a list of volumes from your chosen parish. Look for the volume you wish to open in the list and double click it with left mouse button to open the volume.
    • When the volume is opened: To browse in the volume, use the buttons -5, -1, +1 and +5 or make a specific choice in the drop-down-list between the -1 and +1-buttons

NOTE:
If you would like to try our new Beta-version of ADOnline, you will be able to switch to English language.
Start installation here: arkivdigital-installer-1.4.3-beta-r654.exe
To change language select "Visa" in the menu and then "Språk/Language".

Building a Family from Circumstantial Evidence. Most genealogists learn very quickly that it's a rare family where direct evidence supplies all the proof needed to connect one generation to another and tie brothers and sisters to each other. In most cases, it's necessary to build the case for family relationships from bits and pieces and hints and clues gathered from a wide variety of sources. What is a 'Reasonably Exhaustive Search'? The first step of the Genealogical Proof Standard is to "complete a reasonably exhaustive search for all relevant records" related to your research objective. This presentation discusses what a "reasonably exhaustive search" constitutes, why this is necessary, and how to conduct a search. A case study explores how failing to identify all relevant records can lead to missing information and forming inaccurate conclusions about your ancestors' lives.Michael Hait, CGRegister
