Special October General Meeting

Each October, PCGS hosts a special luncheon event for our general meeting and this year is no different.

On Saturday, October 15, we will have our annual luncheon at the Evergreen Cemetery (3015 N. Oracle Road, Tucson). There will be several speakers including Betty Cook and the Arizona Chapter Association for Gravestone Studies. Topics include the Greenwood Cemetery, Evergreen Cemetery, Symbolism and Grave rubbings.

The cost is $5 and may be paid through the PCGS Marketplace or by check or cash at the September meeting. This event is open to members and non-members for the same $5. Advanced registration and payment by October 8 is required. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

May Meeting Saturday May 16th, How to Uncover Hidden Clues in Photos!

Pull out your magnifying glass and put on your detective hat! This months meeting will show you How to Uncover Hidden Clues in Photos,Presented by Sherri Hessick and Jodi Strait, this program promises to give you new insight to old photos.   We will meet from 1:00PM-3:00PM in our usual location:

 University Medical Center, College of Medicine, Room 2117.

Saturday, March 21 PCGS General Meeting  (Monthly Meetings) 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm Univ. Medical Center, College of Medicine, Room 2117 Get the scoop on lineage societies and how to accurately complete the required documentation. Lynne Brooke, our featured speaker for this program, is a professional genealogist and formerly worked on the genealogy staff of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her program, "Lineage Society Proofs", will guide you through the maze of lineage societies currently available and explain how to locate the required documentation to prove your lineage. The second part of our meeting will challenge you with "What Do You Think You Know?" about all things genealogy!

Society Indexing Contest.............

Let's get those fingers moving and help our society compete in the indexing contest!  We are slightly behind in the indexing per capita average.  If you are registered please consider adding a page or two to what you have been indexing.  If you are not yet a registered indexer go to the 1940 Census Community Project Getting Started page to register as an indexer, download the indexing software, and begin indexing. When creating your FamilySearch account, please select Pima County Genealogy Society as your group (note that Minnesota also has a group by the same name, but they have "-MN" appended to the name. Please be sure not to select that group). Registering with our society automatically qualifies you to be entered into weekly drawings.  As little as fifteen minutes a day indexing  would be a great help.

Dear Society Administrators,We've had a lot of questions asking about the society indexing contest that was mentioned earlier. Well, our society indexing group contests are finally here! We have some great prizes for those who want to take part in this competition. There will be a couple categories, depending on the size and activity of your society's group. Requirements and prizes will vary for each category. Grand Prize for Per Capita Production on the 1940 Index The grand prize will be awarded to the society with the highest average number of records indexed and arbitrated per person by a society with 2 or more people in their indexing group. They must have a 95% or higher indexing accuracy average. Prize: A mini-conference presented at your society location. The total value of this package is $6,000! This prize includes: 4 genealogists, each teaching three sessions (Speaker fees, travel, and accommodations are included). A syllabus of the conference presentations on a USB drive, CD, or print format (depending on the actual number of attendees). Your society provides the site for the conference or we can provide a local FamilySearch family history center where the conference can be held. Competition will go from April 2nd and continue until the 1940 US Census project is completely arbitrated; after which the winner will be announced. (Note: A small society indexing group has 15 or less people, while a large society indexing group has 16 or more people.) In the case of a tie, a random drawing will be done to select the winner. Prize: A brand new printer valued at $300 We will track the growth of your society membership from April 26th through May 2nd. Winners will be announced on May 4, 2012. Don't forget to send in your wedding pictures and tombstone pictures for Wedding Wednesday and Tombstone Tuesday.  Please include a jpeg and a short paragraph or few sentences about your picture/family.  Your picture will be posted on our blog and any inquiries will be forwarded to you.  This is a wonderful opportunity to share your family research with the society and the Geneabloggers on the web.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for the DNA talk on January 14 at UMC Room 2117.  Bill Peckat will be the room equipment host and will introduce Dr. Kaplan.  Dr. Matt Kaplan will talk on the use of DNA.  He is the  Director of the Bio5 DNA testing lab that does all the testing for National Geographic Genographic Project and for Family Tree DNA. Matt is a master presenter, and makes this subject very understandable. Don't miss this opportunity!


Our next regular monthly meeting will be January 21, 2012 at the Joel Valdez Main Library downtown.  Please note the program time of 2 to 4 p.m.  Our presentation will be on Organizing Yourself to Organize Your Research presented by JoAnn Thiabault followed by a Genealogy Fair with software demonstrations on the more popular genealogical software.  More information to come as we get closer to the meeting date.

We have two wonderful presentations for you Saturday, October 15th.  Our first program is Federal, State Census & More My Experiences with Census by Al Seames followed by Learn about You by Learning about THEM:  The Relationship Between Cultural and Genealogical Studies presented by Colleen McHugh, LMSW.  This month's meeting is at University Medical Center, Room 2117,  1:00 p.m. to 3:30 pm. Enter the Medical Central from Campbell Avenue -- in front of the Main Hospital

Turn left at the first side street

Turn right into the Parking Garage Entrance – parking is free on Saturdays

Turn right into the Patient/Visitor Underground Parking Garage

Take the elevator at the northwest end of the garage to the 4^th floor

Enter the Hospital through the main doors

Go to the hallway just past the elevators

Turn left and go almost to the double doors exiting the building

Turn right and before you would enter the Library, turn left at the double doors

Room 2117 is at the far south end of that hallway

Park in the Lot just south of the College of Nursing and Pharmacy

Go north through the middle of the two college buildings until you get to the double glass doors to         enter the College of Medicine

Turn left (west) after you enter the building until just before the Library
