Tucson Oasis Class Schedule

Pima County Genealogy Society will be presenting several classes through Oasis.  Subjects and information about the classes are listed below.  Pima County Genealogy Society members are entitled to a reduced fee for each class. Please notify Oasis when registering that you are a member.

Oasis is an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of mature adults (50+) through programs in the arts, humanities,technology and volunteer service.  Please visit their website at for additional information about the classes and registering.

February 21, 2012 – Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. - Junior League Office, 2099 E. River Road
        Say Cheese! Interpreting Clues in Ancestors’ Photos  (Class #262)
        Instructors:   Jodi Strait-Shutts and Sherri Hessick 
        We will discuss the different types of photographs and the dates when they were in use. There are several published sources and websites that may be of help in dating photographs. We will also talk about the different ways of preserving your photographs, including scanning.
February 24, 2012 – Friday – 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. – Junior League Office, 2099 E. River Road
        Diggin’ Up Those Bones -- Exploring Your Family History (Class #540)
        Instructor:        Barbara Salyer and Amy Urman
        This is a class for those who are interested in finding out more about their ancestors.  We will explore how to begin searching or how to continue your research. What  records are you looking for? We will discuss how to locate pictures and documents, as well as give you tips on communicating and corresponding with relatives. We will also give you suggestions on planning your research and finding available resources.
March 12, 2012 – Monday – 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. – Junior League Office, 2099 E. River Road
        March Forth! Did Your Ancestor Serve in the Military? (Class #155)
         Instructors:  Barbara Salyer and Sherri Hessick
        Discussion of military records for World Wars I and II, and Spanish-American War, Civil War and American Revolution. Pension records and military records are available for some military conflicts. A military record may tell you medical information on your soldier. Personnel records are available for civilians who worked for the military. Draft registration records for men of age to serve in the military give information on an individual – although he never actually served in the military.
April 6, 2012 – Friday 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. -- Junior League Office, 2099 E. River Road
        Thrifty Tips and Tricks for Researching Your Family on the Internet (Class #546)
        Instructors:  Amy Urman and Barbara Ball
        We will be reviewing a number of free sites as well as some of the more valuable sites that require a subscription. We will also tell you about the subscription sites that are available free at LDS Family History Centers.
